When Robert Duvall passed away in February, among all the in memoriam and commentary, I came across a quote from him saying his favorite role was as Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove (“Let the English play King Lear in Hamlet. That’s wonderful. I’ll play Augustus McCrae.”). The mini-series itself feels very very very dated and watered down (I didn’t even finish it), but the novel, wow, maybe the fastest 900 pages I’ve ever read. Highly recommend.
